Some musical partnerships leave an imprint that never really fades, no matter how many years pass or how many different directions the musicians eventually take.
For metalcore fans who grew up with The End of Heartache and As Daylight Dies, the chemistry between Howard Jones and Adam Dutkiewicz helped define an era.
Now, nearly 15 years after their tenure together in Killswitch Engage ended, the two musicians are officially reuniting under a new name.
Burn Eternal, the long-awaited project featuring former Killswitch Engage vocalist Howard Jones and guitarist-producer Adam Dutkiewicz, has signed with Metal Blade Records.
The announcement, made October 21, 2026, confirms that their completed debut album has secured a label home, with the first new music expected to arrive soon.
And for fans who have been following this collaboration through years of studio updates, delays, and tantalizing promises, that is finally something substantial to celebrate.
Burn Eternal: Howard Jones and Adam Dutkiewicz Reconnect After Killswitch Engage
The history behind Burn Eternal reaches back to one of metalcore’s most influential periods.
Jones joined Killswitch Engage in 2002, stepping into the vocalist position after Jesse Leach’s departure.
Alongside Dutkiewicz, whose guitar work, songwriting, and production helped establish the band’s unmistakable identity, Jones brought a powerful combination of commanding harsh vocals and soaring melodic delivery.
The partnership helped produce three Killswitch Engage studio albums:
- The End of Heartache (2004)
- As Daylight Dies (2006)
- Killswitch Engage (2009)
The End of Heartache earned the band its first Grammy nomination and won Best Album at the 2004 Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards.
Its successor, As Daylight Dies, became a platinum-selling landmark and remains the band’s best-selling album.
Songs such as “My Curse,” “The Arms of Sorrow,” “Rose of Sharyn,” and “The End of Heartache” became defining recordings for a generation of metalcore listeners.
But what made the partnership memorable wasn’t simply the commercial success. It was the contrast between Dutkiewicz’s precision-engineered riffs and Jones’s remarkable ability to move from devastating aggression into emotionally charged melodies.
That combination gave the band’s heaviest moments a powerful sense of vulnerability without sacrificing intensity.
From a London Lunch to a Completed Burn Eternal Album
Burn Eternal didn’t begin with an elaborate industry strategy or a carefully staged reunion announcement.
According to Jones, the idea emerged during lunch with Dutkiewicz in London.
What began as an opportunity for two old friends to make music together eventually grew into an entire album.
Jones expressed his enthusiasm in the official Metal Blade announcement:
“From an idea while having lunch in London to a completed album, this has been such a fun way to reconnect with my friend.”
Dutkiewicz was equally enthusiastic, describing the experience as a chance to return to the studio with someone whose musical instincts he already knew intimately.
Rather than presenting Burn Eternal as a grand attempt to recreate the past, the guitarist approached it with his characteristic humor, describing the pair as two friends enjoying the process of making music together again.
Burn Eternal is not a Killswitch Engage reunion, nor does it signal Dutkiewicz’s departure from the band.
It is a separate creative partnership, giving Jones and Dutkiewicz the freedom to explore what their musical relationship sounds like today.
Why Did the Burn Eternal Album Take So Long?
The project has been developing for several years. In August 2023, Jones revealed that 13 demos had been created for the collaboration.
Work continued through 2024, and the album was reportedly mixed by December of that year. But the music remained unreleased.
For fans, the extended silence prompted understandable questions about whether the project would ever emerge.
Dutkiewicz addressed those delays in subsequent interviews, explaining that the finished material was awaiting the right label arrangement.
The October 2026 announcement finally resolves that uncertainty. Burn Eternal has a record deal, an established label behind its release, and a completed album ready for its next chapter.
What remains unknown is precisely when listeners will hear it. Metal Blade has not yet confirmed the album’s title, tracklist, or release date. The first official song has also not been announced by title.
What Will Burn Eternal Sound Like?
For anyone wondering whether the project will resemble the Jones-fronted Killswitch Engage albums, Dutkiewicz has already offered a fairly straightforward answer.
Speaking previously with TotalRock, he acknowledged that his songwriting naturally carries elements of the sound he helped establish with Killswitch Engage.
The guitarist’s distinctive approach to rhythm, melody, and arrangement is difficult to separate from his musical identity.
Likewise, Jones remains one of the most recognizable vocalists to emerge from the American metalcore movement.
His commanding clean vocals and formidable screams were essential ingredients in the albums that brought Killswitch Engage international recognition.
Burn Eternal also provides an opportunity to move beyond the expectations associated with those recordings.
The two musicians have accumulated another decade of creative experience since their last Killswitch Engage studio album together.
Jones continued his career with Devil You Know, later renamed Light the Torch, while Dutkiewicz remained a central creative force within Killswitch Engage.
The prospect of hearing those experiences converge in a fresh collaboration is arguably more interesting than simply asking whether Burn Eternal sounds like The End of Heartache Part Two.
There is no publicly released single to judge yet, so any more specific description of the finished album would be speculation.
Metal Blade Records Welcomes Burn Eternal
For their debut release, Jones and Dutkiewicz have chosen one of heavy metal’s longest-established independent labels.
Founded in 1982 by Brian Slagel, Metal Blade Records has played an influential role in developing and supporting underground metal for more than four decades.
Its history includes early releases associated with Metallica and Slayer, alongside an extensive roster spanning death metal, traditional heavy metal, and progressive music.
The relationship appears to be an especially comfortable fit for the new duo.
Dutkiewicz praised the label’s atmosphere, explaining that Metal Blade felt like family rather than a corporation.
Metal Blade founder and CEO Brian Slagel also expressed considerable enthusiasm about the signing, stating:
“As a fan, I love it!”
With the label’s support now secured, the remaining question is how soon Burn Eternal will unveil its music.
Howard Jones and Killswitch Engage: A Musical Connection That Never Completely Disappeared
Although Jones departed Killswitch Engage in 2012, his connection with the band did not end permanently.
In 2019, he returned as a guest vocalist on “The Signal Fire,” appearing alongside his successor, Jesse Leach, on the band’s Atonement album.
The collaboration demonstrated that the two eras of Killswitch Engage could coexist without reducing either vocalist’s contributions.
Jones has also made occasional live appearances with the group. Those moments were significant for fans, but Burn Eternal offers something different: an opportunity to hear Jones and Dutkiewicz creating an entire body of new material together.
And this time, rather than stepping into the expectations surrounding an established band, they are building something under their own name.
What Comes Next for Burn Eternal?
As of October 23, 2026, Burn Eternal has confirmed its partnership with Metal Blade Records and the completion of its debut album.
A release date, album title, tracklist, and first single have yet to be revealed. There are also no confirmed touring plans.
For now, the announcement represents a major step forward for a project that has been discussed for several years without producing an official release.
The creative partnership responsible for some of metalcore’s most recognizable recordings is active again.
Whether Burn Eternal ultimately revisits familiar territory or establishes a distinctly new identity remains to be heard.
But one thing is certain. Howard Jones and Adam Dutkiewicz didn’t need to resurrect Killswitch Engage’s past to make their collaboration worth anticipating.
They simply needed to get back into a room together and write music.
And after years of waiting, we’re finally getting closer to hearing the result.
