Aerosmith Reunites With Joey Kramer as Classic Lineup Prepares for Hollywood Bowl Comeback

For a band that once appeared to have played its final note, Aerosmith is making some unexpected noise again. And this time, all five members of the classic lineup are in the room.

Aerosmith has reunited with founding drummer Joey Kramer, bringing Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, Brad Whitford, Tom Hamilton, and Kramer back together as the legendary Boston rockers rehearse for two highly anticipated performances at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles.

On October 20, the band shared a collection of rehearsal photographs taken by acclaimed rock photographer Ross Halfin, offering fans their first look at the reunited lineup preparing for its return.

The band’s accompanying message was short, simple, and unmistakably Aerosmith:

“The bad boys from Boston are back.”

For fans who watched the group’s farewell tour collapse after Steven Tyler sustained a serious vocal injury in 2023, even the possibility of another full-band performance once seemed remote.

Now, the band’s comeback is scheduled for October 29 and November 1, 2026.

The biggest surprise isn’t simply that Aerosmith is returning. It’s who’s sitting behind the drums.

Aerosmith Reunites With Joey Kramer After More Than Six Years

The founding drummer last performed with Aerosmith on February 15, 2020, during the band’s Deuces Are Wild residency in Las Vegas.

His relationship with the band had already experienced a difficult period following a shoulder injury in 2019.

In early 2020, a disagreement over his ability to return to performing escalated into a legal dispute, with Kramer seeking to rejoin his bandmates for their Grammy-related appearances.

Although he subsequently returned to the stage during Aerosmith’s Las Vegas residency, his involvement with the group remained uncertain in the years that followed.

Kramer later stepped away to address personal and family matters. In 2022, he suffered the devastating loss of his wife, Linda.

When Aerosmith launched its Peace Out farewell tour in September 2023, drummer John Douglas occupied the position behind the kit. Kramer was not involved. For longtime fans, his absence was impossible to ignore.

His distinctive playing had helped define Aerosmith’s groove since the band’s earliest days, providing the rhythmic foundation beneath songs including “Walk This Way,” “Sweet Emotion,” “Back in the Saddle,” and countless others.

Now, six years after his last performance with the band, the rehearsal photographs show Kramer back alongside the musicians with whom he helped create one of American rock’s most enduring catalogs.

The images do not answer every question about the group’s future, but they establish something significant. The classic five are together again.

Steven Tyler’s Vocal Injury Nearly Ended Aerosmith’s Touring Career

The road back to the Hollywood Bowl has been anything but straightforward.

In September 2023, Aerosmith launched its eagerly anticipated Peace Out farewell tour, intended to bring more than five decades of music to audiences one final time.

But the celebration came to an abrupt halt after just three performances. Steven Tyler suffered a fractured larynx and serious vocal damage, forcing the band to postpone the remaining dates.

Initially, fans hoped the interruption would be temporary. That optimism faded in August 2024 when Aerosmith announced it was officially retiring from touring.

The group explained that Tyler’s recovery had not progressed sufficiently for the demanding vocal performances required by an Aerosmith concert.

It was a heartbreaking conclusion for a band whose live performances had become legendary for their swagger, unpredictability, and sheer physical energy.

For generations of fans, it appeared the opportunity to see Tyler and Perry trading musical fire onstage had disappeared.

Yet Tyler continued making occasional appearances at benefit concerts and special musical events, including Black Sabbath’s historic Back to the Beginning concert in July 2025.

Those appearances offered encouragement, but they were not proof that a full Aerosmith performance was possible again.

Until now.

Aerosmith & Friends: Hollywood Bowl Concerts Announced for October 29 and November 1

Aerosmith’s return will take place under the banner California, Dream On: Aerosmith & Friends.

The two Hollywood Bowl performances are scheduled for:

  • Thursday, October 29, 2026
  • Sunday, November 1, 2026

Rather than launching another extensive farewell tour, the band has chosen two special concerts featuring an extraordinary collection of musicians whose careers intersect with Aerosmith’s influence.

Among the announced performers are Guns N’ Roses, The Black Crowes, Heart, Run-DMC, Sammy Hagar, Billy Idol, Tom Morello, and members of Alice in Chains.

Additional participating musicians include Slash, Duff McKagan, Chad Smith, Jerry Cantrell, Mike Inez, Nuno Bettencourt, and Andrew Watt. Don Was is serving as musical director.

The guest lineup varies between the two nights, giving each performance its own combination of musicians and potential collaborations.

For longtime Aerosmith fans, the inclusion of Run-DMC is especially meaningful.

The groundbreaking 1986 collaboration on “Walk This Way” helped bridge the worlds of hard rock and hip-hop, introducing Aerosmith to an entirely new generation while fundamentally changing the possibilities for musical crossover.

Four decades later, that connection remains one of rock history’s most influential collaborations.

Guns N’ Roses Join the Aerosmith Hollywood Bowl Celebration

Among the most prominent guests are fellow hard-rock giants Guns N’ Roses.

The Los Angeles band has now been announced as a special guest for both Hollywood Bowl performances, adding another major attraction to an already star-studded event.

The relationship between the two groups stretches back decades.

Guns N’ Roses supported Aerosmith during the late 1980s, a period when both bands were helping reshape the commercial landscape of hard rock.

A reunion of these musical generations at the Hollywood Bowl brings that shared history full circle.

With additional artists spanning classic rock, alternative metal, blues rock, and hip-hop, the concerts promise something more expansive than a conventional Aerosmith greatest-hits performance.

They represent a celebration of the band’s influence across multiple generations and musical styles.

Is Aerosmith Coming Back for a Full Tour?

For fans hoping these Hollywood Bowl concerts signal a complete reversal of Aerosmith’s retirement, expectations should remain realistic.

As of October 23, 2026, the band has announced two special performances.

There has been no confirmed announcement of a new Aerosmith tour.

A carefully planned pair of concerts is fundamentally different from returning to months of consecutive live performances and travel.

Still, the group’s willingness to reunite for these events represents a significant development after years of uncertainty.

And with Joey Kramer participating in rehearsals, the celebration takes on an additional emotional dimension.

This is not simply an Aerosmith show with guest musicians. It’s an opportunity to see the band’s classic lineup together again.

Five Musicians, More Than Five Decades of Rock History

Formed in Boston in 1970, Aerosmith helped establish a distinctly American approach to hard rock, blending blues, swagger, sexually charged lyrics, and explosive live performances.

Through albums such as Toys in the Attic, Rocks, Permanent Vacation, Pump, and Get a Grip, the group navigated changing musical trends while building one of rock’s most recognizable catalogs.

Their career has survived addiction, internal conflicts, lineup difficulties, shifting musical fashions, and the relentless demands of life on the road.

The relationship between the musicians has never been without friction.

Kramer’s absence and the legal dispute surrounding his attempted return were particularly painful chapters in that history.

But the latest rehearsal photographs offer an image few fans expected to see again: Tyler, Perry, Whitford, Hamilton, and Kramer preparing to perform as Aerosmith.

Whether the Hollywood Bowl concerts prove to be a final celebration or the beginning of occasional future appearances remains unknown. For now, the significance lies in the reunion itself.

Aerosmith’s Hollywood Bowl Comeback Is Already a Victory for Fans

Rock history is littered with farewell tours that weren’t really farewells, reunions that collapsed before the first rehearsal, and promises that never materialized. Aerosmith knows that territory.

After Tyler’s devastating vocal injury, the cancellation of the Peace Out tour, and years of uncertainty surrounding Joey Kramer, the band’s return feels different.

Nobody needs to pretend that five musicians who have spent more than half a century together have suddenly erased every disagreement or hardship.

Their history is complicated. That’s part of what makes this reunion meaningful.

On October 29, the spotlight will return to Aerosmith at the Hollywood Bowl.

And if everything goes according to plan, Joey Kramer will once again be behind the drums, Steven Tyler will be at the microphone, and the classic lineup will be making music together.

After everything they’ve been through, that’s worth celebrating. Because sometimes, the sweetest emotion is simply getting another chance.
