THE BERZERKER FAN INJURY HALTS COMEBACK SHOW
Australian extreme metal veterans THE BERZERKER waited 17 years to return to the stage, but when a fan went down in the pit during their long-awaited comeback show, the band didn’t hesitate to stop the music.
THE BERZERKER made their first live appearance since 2009 on August 22 at Necrosonic Festival at Mansfield Tavern in Brisbane, Australia. The landmark comeback was interrupted during a performance of “The Deception” when The Berzerker fan injury incident occurred involving a woman in the pit was knocked unconscious.
The set was temporarily halted while medical assistance was provided and a path was cleared through the crowd so the injured fan could be taken to safety. Once the band received the all-clear, the performance resumed.
Thankfully, THE BERZERKER later confirmed that she was okay.
“We had to stop the show mid-set after a fan was knocked out in the pit. Luckily she’s okay,” the band said following the show.
They also had a simple message for fans: look after one another. Go as hard as you want, they said, but make sure everyone gets home safely.
THE BERZERKER RETURN AFTER 17 YEARS AWAY
The Berzerker fan injury interruption came during a show that had been nearly two decades in the making.
Formed in Melbourne in 1995 and led by Luke Kenny, THE BERZERKER built a reputation for an abrasive collision of death metal, grindcore, speedcore and electronic extremity. Their masked appearance and notoriously intense live performances helped make the band one of the more unusual forces to emerge from Australia’s extreme metal underground.
Necrosonic Festival specifically billed the August 22 appearance as THE BERZERKER’s first show in 17 years.
A review from inside Mansfield Tavern described an appropriately chaotic return, with the band performing largely in darkness against disturbing video imagery while the pit erupted in front of them. When the incident occurred, festival and venue staff quickly responded, the crowd made room and the injured attendee was carried from the pit.
Once everyone knew she was safe, THE BERZERKER went right back to doing what THE BERZERKER does.
WHEN SOMEONE GOES DOWN, PICK THEM UP
Metal pits are supposed to be chaotic. That’s part of the attraction.
But there’s an unwritten rule that matters more than any wall of death, circle pit or flying elbow: when somebody goes down, you help them back up.
Stopping a highly anticipated comeback performance after 17 years away might have killed the momentum for a few minutes. It also demonstrated exactly where the band’s priorities were.
The show can wait.
THE BERZERKER still have more activity ahead in 2026, including an October 13 show at The Tote in Melbourne and an appearance at Damnation Festival at BEC Arena in Manchester on November 7.
The band’s long-unreleased album The Reawakening is also scheduled for release October 30 through Apocalyptic Witchcraft.
Seventeen years is a hell of a long time to wait for THE BERZERKER to return.
Fortunately, everyone involved in their first night back got to go home.
