From Metal to Keto: The Multifaceted Journey of Sahil Makhija’s Headbanger’s Kitchen

Sahil Makhija can deliver a death-metal vocal and then talk you through dinner. Known to metal fans as Demonstealer, the Mumbai musician behind Demonic Resurrection is also the creator of Headbanger’s Kitchen. His cooking videos bring the same hands-on enthusiasm to a pan that he brings to a record: try it, work at it, and put something of yourself into the result.

The appeal isn’t simply the sight of a metalhead cooking. Food was part of his life before he built a band, and Headbanger’s Kitchen gave that other obsession a microphone. Keto became an important chapter, but the story is bigger than a diet label.

From Demonic Resurrection to Demonstealer

Makhija founded Demonic Resurrection in Mumbai in 2000, while still a teenager. In a scene where covers often dominated, the band pursued its own songs. As he explained in a Decibel interview, making original metal also meant helping build the infrastructure around it: recording, releasing music and putting on shows.

Demonic Resurrection appeared in the documentary Global Metal, which explored metal scenes beyond the genre’s familiar Western centres and also featured acts including Sepultura and Lamb of God. His separate Demonstealer project gives him another outlet for writing and collaborating. In Metal Lair’s 2022 interview with Sahil Makhija, he discussed both projects, their changing sounds and the musicians who helped bring them to life.

That work sits within a much broader Indian metal story. Our newer World Metal Weekly: India feature places Demonic Resurrection in that scene and includes Sahil’s own choice of a gateway track. It is a useful next stop for readers who know him from the kitchen and want to hear what happens when he plugs in.

How Headbanger’s Kitchen Began

On the official Headbanger’s Kitchen site, Sahil dates the show’s start to 2011 and says he has been cooking since he was 12. The early idea joined his two interests directly: food and metal musicians sharing the same table.

In a 2014 interview with The Economic Times, he described choosing dishes around a guest’s tastes, then giving them names drawn from a band, song or album. Interviewing Nile drummer George Kollias was a particular highlight. This wasn’t metal decoration pasted onto a cooking show; the guests and the meals were part of the same conversation.

The format evolved, with keto recipes becoming a major part of the channel and its recipe archive. The recipes range beyond that label, but Sahil’s appetite for cooking and sharing it remains the thread.

A Cook Before the Camera

In his Thousand Faces interview, Sahil recalled school cooking classes and childhood ambitions of becoming a chef and opening a restaurant. He also considered acting and, later, computer science. Those were possible paths, not qualifications or careers he had already completed.

One early kitchen memory is wonderfully practical: on a family holiday, aged about 11 or 12, he made eggs for roughly 18 people, taking orders for omelettes or scrambled eggs. Before the camera, there was already a hungry audience.

“I cooked breakfast for around 18 people, and it was eggs” — Sahil Makhija, speaking to Thousand Faces.

Cooking on Camera

The three videos preserved below offer a small taste of that personality: restaurant-style butter chicken, his mother’s cheese toast recipe and a Hot Ones sauces challenge. They move from a full meal to comfort food to a test of chilli tolerance, without requiring the viewer to know a single Demonic Resurrection song.

That is what makes the crossover work. Metal fans can meet the cook behind the growl; food fans can discover the musician behind the recipes. Neither interest needs to be treated as a novelty act. Sahil has made room for both, and there is something reassuringly metal about refusing to choose.
