Metal is not suffering from a shortage of women capable of tearing a stage apart. If anyone still needs convincing, Belgium has assembled three days of evidence.
Female Fronted Violence Fest II is underway this weekend at Club HELL in Diest, Belgium, bringing together an international lineup spanning heavy metal, melodic death metal, symphonic metal, metalcore, alternative metal and some considerably darker corners of the genre.
Running September 4 through September 6, the festival puts women-fronted heavy music at the center of the bill rather than treating it as a novelty, side stage or occasional addition.
For decades, women in heavy music have routinely been separated from their male counterparts with qualifiers, special categories and the persistent suggestion that their presence in metal requires explanation. Female Fronted Violence Fest turns that idea on its head. Here, the breadth of the music itself does the talking.

The second edition of Female Fronted Violence Fest takes place at Club HELL, located at Nijverheidslaan 7 in Diest.
Friday launches the weekend with four bands before Saturday expands into an eight-band marathon and Sunday closes the festival with five more performances. Club HELL currently lists the festival as running from Friday evening through Sunday, September 6.

The festival has undergone several late lineup changes from earlier announcements, making the current running order notably different from some of the bills circulated ahead of the weekend.
One Stage, Very Different Definitions of Heavy
What makes Female Fronted Violence Fest particularly interesting isn’t simply the number of women on the bill. It’s how little the bands sound alike.
The weekend stretches across an enormous chunk of the heavy-music spectrum.
Ancient Settlers bring melodic death metal into the equation, while Slovenian outfit Hellcats fly the flag for traditional heavy metal. Underwaves arrive from Romania with an alternative metalcore attack, while Wicked Leather pulls from the old-school heavy metal tradition. Orchid Sanction brings gothic metal into Sunday’s proceedings, while Pirate Queen closes the festival with theatrical symphonic power metal.
Defacing God brings an altogether darker presence to Saturday night’s closing slot. The Danish extreme-metal outfit released Darkness Is My Crown earlier this year through Apostasy Records.
That range quietly dismantles one of the stranger habits surrounding women in heavy music: treating “female-fronted metal” as though it describes a musical genre. It doesn’t.
A vocalist’s gender tells you precisely nothing about whether the next thing coming through the speakers will be gothic, symphonic, traditional heavy metal, death metal, metalcore, progressive metal or something that cheerfully raids several of those cupboards at once.
Female Fronted Violence Fest puts that diversity on one bill.
More Than Representation
There is another reason an event like this catches our attention at Metal Lair.
Through our ongoing A Rip in Time: Women in Metal project, we have spent months digging through the history of women in rock and metal, from internationally recognized artists to musicians whose contributions survive in scattered interviews, old recordings, forgotten scenes and fragments of the historical record.
The deeper we dig, the larger that history becomes. Today’s underground is tomorrow’s archive.
Festivals and independent venues are part of that history because they give developing artists somewhere to exist beyond an algorithm. They put bands from different countries and different corners of heavy music in the same room, in front of people who may have walked through the door knowing only two names on the poster. Someone may leave knowing ten.
Female Fronted Violence Fest also demonstrates something worth remembering whenever the tired question of where are all the women in metal? resurfaces.
They’re already here. They’re making records. They’re touring. They’re screaming, singing, writing, playing and building scenes from Belgium to Slovenia, Romania, Denmark and beyond.
Sometimes you just have to look beyond the biggest festival poster of the summer to find them. And Metal Lair intends to keep looking.
