“Soundtracks vs. Scandals: The Battle for Our Attention”
Written By Aria Dragonetti
I recently covered a dramatic incident involving a band that got into a kerfuffle on stage during a reunion show. Nothing really new here, right? This ultimately led to the abrupt cancellation of their tour. At first glance, it might seem like just another rock ‘n’ roll meltdown. But in today’s world, where every moment is captured for social media and the quest for viral content reigns supreme, the subtext of this story is anything but ordinary.
This little slice of melodrama garnered over 1000 clicks in under 5 minutes and this really made me think. Why do we, as writers, struggle to shift the spotlight onto emerging music and the creative processes behind compelling lyrics? It often feels like only well-known artists or sensational gossip capture our attention. Yet, there’s a rich bounty of talent out there waiting to be discovered. An intricate narrative of passion, innovation, and artistry that deserves our focus. By diving deeper into the stories of these musicians, we can elevate the discourse and ignite a genuine appreciation for their craft.
I can’t be alone in believing that the vast majority of music journalists are driven by a passion to showcase remarkable talent, aspiring to help these artists cultivate a wider audience. Music, after all, is not just an art form, it’s a vital force that connects us, inspires us, and shapes our culture.
Music lights up nearly all of the brain including the hippocampus and amygdala, which activate emotional responses to music through memory. Music isn’t just a backdrop, it’s a powerful storyteller. It can elevate the mood, set the scene, and stir emotions, forging a deep connection with the audience. Through its rhythms and melodies, music unveils a film’s theme and message, while spotlighting characters’ personalities and evolving journeys. It’s not just heard—it’s felt! Then theres the concert experience. An electric thrill ride like no other surrounded by a sea of people, all vibing together to the same music. It’s a full-on sensory explosion. The energy is contagious, and the shared experience makes it a wild ride. People clean their homes to music, drive around in their cars blasting their favorite songs and the list goes on.
Music is my love language. Music is my way of connecting with the world. I’m always sharing song links with my friends and weaving lyrics into conversations whenever they fit. For me, music isn’t just something I enjoy, it’s how I express myself and build bonds with those around me.
So how did we end up in this bizarre reality? It’s baffling how incredible music can go unnoticed while people flock to watch chaotic antics, brawls, and all the latest in baby daddy drama. I mean, who knew marital disputes could be more entertaining than a killer guitar solo? It’s like we’ve collectively decided that reality TV is the new rock ‘n’ roll!
MTV’s golden age of music videos came to an end with the rise of shows like The Real World. This shift marked the beginning of MTV’s decline in relevance and value. While there were other factors contributing to the fall of music video prominence, the network’s pivot to reality TV played a significant role in this transformation.
The original TV channel dedicated to music appreciation eroded by the widespread appeal of sensationalized content.
Social media has significantly transformed the music industry, changing how we discover, promote, and enjoy music. Artists now have the ability to reach fans worldwide, independently market their work, and explore new revenue streams. However, many consumers still prefer media “junk food.”
It’s time to reignite our love affair with music! Let’s shake off the dust and take a leap into the unknown—dare to spin that brand-new track or dive headfirst into a genre you’ve never tried. Support those local musicians who are just waiting for their big break; they could be the next big thing! Crank up the radio, roll down the windows, and let the world hear your soundtrack. And yes, treat yourself to that concert ticket—it’s a small price to pay for unforgettable memories. After all, the biggest regret people have is not trying enough new things, so why not start with music? Your ears (and your soul) will thank you!
