Post-metal visionaries embrace blackened intensity on their most emotional release yet, featuring Sakis Tolis of Rotting Christ.
Greek post-metal collective Unverkalt have never shied away from emotional weight or sonic extremity. Since emerging from Greece’s underground in 2017, the five-piece have carved out a space where vast atmosphere collides with crushing heaviness.
Now, with their third full-length album Héréditaire and their first release through Season of Mist, the band descend further into darkness, delivering what may be their most intense and personal work to date.
Héréditaire explores inherited trauma, collective memory, and the lingering shadows of human history. The album balances fragility and fury, weaving melancholic passages with explosive blackened aggression.
Early critical response has been praising its emotional depth and evolving dynamics, calling it “a compelling listen that rewards over time.”
According to guitarist and chief composer Themis Ioannou, the album represents the culmination of the band’s long-standing artistic vision.
“Our aim has always been to blend softer, more romantic elements with extreme chaos. With Héréditaire, that time has now come. This album is a lament for what is far older than our very existence. What passes through generations asking: what do we carry that was never ours?”
That tension defines the record. Lead single “Die Auslöschung” emerges slowly through atmospheric haze before erupting into blast-driven intensity, while “Oath Ov Prometheus” dismantles myths of human perfection through newly blackened vocal approaches from vocalist Dimitra Kalavrezou.
Unverkalt’s evolving sound merges Ioannou’s twin influences of black metal and post-metal into a unified identity.
“We love to experiment with every album,” Ioannou explains. “Introducing extreme vocals brings out heavy emotions. It feels like being shaken awake.”
Lyrically and conceptually, Héréditaire examines generational trauma and inherited belief systems. Tracks like “Introjects” confront ideas passed down unconsciously, described by the band as memories and suffering that linger like unseen ghosts.
One of the album’s defining moments arrives with “I, The Deceit,” featuring guest vocals from Sakis Tolis of Rotting Christ, whose presence adds ritualistic weight to the album’s darkest passages. Tolis himself praised the collaboration, calling the record “an exceptional piece of art, worth every minute of listening.”
As the album closes with “Maladie de l’Esprit,” resolution never arrives, intentionally so.
“This album is not meant to resolve,” the band explains. “It dissolves patterns left by those who came before. What remains is veiled in black, not as symbolism, but as truth.”
With Héréditaire, Unverkalt deepen their cinematic post-metal vision, lifting the veil on humanity’s darker inheritance while pushing their sound toward new extremes.
