Metal Lair’s Seven Deadly Songs

Welcome to Metal Lair’s Seven Deadly Songs weekly feature where we curate music from the past and the present.

Iotunn – I Feel The Night

Danish/Faroese epic progressive metal collective IOTUNN had unveiled their video for “I Feel The Night.” The crushingly stunning track is featured on the band’s Kinship full-length, out now on Metal Blade Records!

“I Feel The Night” is a stunning shift in Iotunn’s Earth To Sky album, offering a rare moment of serenity amidst the heavier chaos. Jon Aldara’s vocal performance is nothing short of extraordinary, effortlessly navigating between haunting, chant-like melodies and intense black metal screams. This track stands as a beautiful contrast to the album’s earlier aggression, providing both emotional depth and a sense of hopeful release. It’s a haunting yet uplifting ballad that gives listeners a breath of fresh air while leaving an indelible mark. If you’re craving a moment of vulnerability and power in the same breath, this song is a must-listen.

The Black Dahlia Murder – Necropolis

Born of a casket, I’m the heir to a corpse I’ve eyes that see maggots through the thin flesh they bore

A perfect song for the end of the week here at Metal Lair! While I’m not the greatest at decuphering lyrics, this song screams “death to humanity at the hands of the dead”! At the opposite end of this spectrum, you have the incredibly silly music video of these guys bowling and getting up to some Real Metalhead Antics(tm) that I am a huge fan of. Rest in Power, Trev.

In this writer’s opinion, Deflorate is a wildly slept on album and this song perfectly showcases why.

Mercenary – The Hours That Remain

Behind the smile My memory fading The time is here The hour remaining

The title track (and the album’s final tune) to Mercenary‘s 2006 effort, this track sees its protagonist’s final hours while they feel the pain of death incoming, or, seeing from the other side, watching somebodies finality. In either case, this is a great tune from another fantastic band and a great oddball tune for the weekend.

Sybreed – Posthuman Manifesto
Let’s disgorge the poison of retrogression and reconstruct your carnal remains

Ah, yes – a tune about shedding your human self and constructing it into mechanical perfection! The opening track to Sybreed‘s 2012 God Is An Automaton sees the band banging it out from front to finish with a tune full of grooves and posthumanism! Two of this writer’s favorite musical things. From a space-eye view, this brings visions of costuming and cyber club partying from those future-sim-like Hollywood films of the Aughts.

Saltwound – The Temptation of Pain

Right out of the gate, Saltwound hits the ground running, launching into The Temptation of Pain with all the subtlety of a freight train barreling down the tracks. A formidable force of unrelenting aggression, the album erupts with blistering riffs and a raw intensity that will stand as some of the most savage moments in metalcore this year. The song “We All Burn,” is Viscerally Metal As Fuck! The song is an unforgiving assault of extravagantly distorted riffs, brutal breakdowns, and gut-punching vocals that leave no room for breathing—just pure, unrelenting chaos.

The Halo Effect – March of The Unheard

Swedish melodic death metal rising stars THE HALO EFFECT has just dropped the official music video for their powerful new single, ‘March Of The Unheard’, the title track from their highly anticipated sophomore album, set to be released on January 10th, 2025.

The visually stunning video matches the intensity of the song, blending dark, atmospheric imagery with explosive performance shots, delivering a cinematic experience that complements the band’s signature sound.

Ater – Through The Portal

Chilean metal extremists ATER have revealed a haunting new video for their doom  laden single “Through The Portal,” from the band’s new album, ‘Somber,” that’s out nowfrom Torque Records

“Through The Portal” is a captivating journey that unfolds over nearly six minutes, offering a rich mosaic of sound that keeps you hooked from start to finish. The track seamlessly shifts between intense growls, delicate guitar melodies, and an eerie, immersive atmosphere, building to an epic, powerful climax. It’s a song that evolves with each passing moment, making for a thrilling and unpredictable listening experience. Don’t miss the chance to dive into this dynamic musical adventure.
