Welcome to Metal Lair’s Seven Deadly Songs of The Week where we discover new music, listen to some of our favorites or revisit the classics.
1. Vended – Where The Honesty Lies
VENDED, has finally released their long-awaited self-titled debut album. The track “Where the Honest Lies” explores themes of lost innocence, the realization of commonality, and the quest for meaning.
Each song on the album is heavy, aggressive, fast, and melodic. Just when you anticipate a guitar solo, the music often shifts to a breakdown or slows down, only to return to its original intensity. Taylor’s intense, screaming vocals shine through, particularly towards the end of several tracks. “Where the Honest Lies” surprised me with an unexpected breakdown followed by a sudden guitar solo, showcasing their dynamic sound. The brutality rating is 9 out of 10.

2. Funeral – My Own Grave
Funeral are releasing their seventh album later this year. Gospel of Bones comes out October 18 on Season of Mist.
“My Own Grave,” the latest single from doom metal band Funeral, is a haunting melody that immerses listeners in a dark journey filled with operatic vocals, subtle folk instrumentation, and heavy riffs.
Set against the dusky terrain of Norway in the cold, barren shawdows, Funeral crafts a sorrowful narrative with this powerful track. As the first release from their upcoming album, Gospel of Bones, it delves into themes of grief and resilience, resonating deeply with fans of the genre.
This song is more than just music; it confronts the endless pain and sorrow that follows the loss of a soulmate and raises profound questions.
In this moment, grief becomes a constant companion, as the ache lingers but gradually subsides. The pain remains as a constant reminder of loss.
My Own Grave incorporates the Harding fiddle, a traditional Norwegian instrument, this song is hauntingly beautiful and inches them closer to folk music, alongside the operatic baritone of vocalist Eirik Krokfjord.

4. Iotunn – Twilight
“Twilight” is the latest single from Danish/Faroese progressive metal collective IOTUNN. The epic new track comes off the band’s second full-length album, Kinship, set for release on October 25th through Metal Blade Records. Guitarist Jesper Gräs further elaborates, “‘Twilight’ is all about energy. The fundamental main riff was written during the time right after [Motörhead’s] Lemmy [Kilmister] died and I wrote this to celebrate his legend and musical influence. From the get-go, it was about high speed, flow, and groove and with the creative process together. It evolved into soundscapes of atmosphere as we know it from the IOTUNN sound – combining the heavy metal with the atmospheres. Lots of Nordic touches to it; lots of epic-ness.”
