Speaking on the songs creation, lead vocalist/guitarist James Drouot stated that he was “listening to a lot of Porridge Radio at the time when I was writing ‘Atlas’, and some of Dana Margolin’s lyricism found its way in for sure.
It felt different for us to start with the bass leading the song. There’s something post punk about those elements together, the drums and the bass, that makes it stand out against other Desire Lines songs“.
Speaking further about the track, James also stated that “Theme-wise I find myself pretty often turning to nature. It’s this shifting thing. It can feel like it moves separately from us when really we’re part of it.
Right now it feels like a tipping point where we are watching a lot of nature’s destruction, and there’s an existential sadness to that, when really it’s nature staring back at us as we destroy ourselves“.
This single comes just ahead of the band’s hometown headline show at Lady Luck, Canterbury on the 22nd of September. Desire Lines will also be performing at Poco Loco, Chatham on the 10th of October.
Formed in 2022, Desire Lines are a UK alternative rock band from Kent, blending 90’s grunge with 2000’s post-hardcore.
Comparisons to the band’s sound have included early Radiohead, Placebo and Yourcodenameis:milo. They have released two EPs, 2023’s ‘Everything is Fine‘ and 2025’s ‘Nervous System‘, and played shows across South East England.
The band formed when James Drouot (lead vocals and guitar) and Jasmine Marceau (bass) began practicing together following the pandemic.
The pair were joined by Marc Prentice (backing vocals and guitar) and Max Newton (drums), formerly of doom band Ohhms. Max played drums on Desire Lines’ first two releases and was replaced by Grant Bailey in 2025.
