New album Birna to be released on January 24, 2025.
WARDRUNA, the acclaimed creators of Norwegian-inspired post-rock and folk, are set to release their sixth album, Birna, on January 24 via Sony Music/By Norse Music. This 10-track collection delves into the natural world, with composer Einar Selvik seeking the voice of the bear.
The album’s lead single, “Himinndotter,” was released today alongside a video filmed in Norway’s Rondane National Park, known for its stunning landscapes and free-roaming reindeer. The song constitutes a search and a calling for our lost sister of the woods. Directed by Tuukka Koski, the video captures the dramatic scenery beautifully.
Composer Einar Selvik states “Himinndotter (Sky-daughter) is part of a six-song exploration of the bear on Wardruna´s upcoming album Birna (She-bear). The title plays on the globally common notion of the bears mythical origin as a celestial being. Himinndotter features guest appearance of the Norwegian choir Koret Artemis”.
The video for Himinndotter is filmed in Rondane National Park in Norway and once again directed by Wardruna´s longtime collaborator Tuukka Koski, and produced by Breakfast Helsinki and Ragnarok Film.
Wardruna will simultaneously release “Live at the Acropolis” on DVD/Blu-Ray. Featuring a September 2023 performance from the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the film includes the full show with additional interviews and behind-the-scenes footage. Birna and “Live at the Acropolis” pre-orders are available now. Pre-order/Stream
